About Neopets
Adam Powell and Donna Williams launched the Neopets website in November 1999 as a virtual pet world for Neopets. Shortly after this is was aquired by Doug Dohring who created Neopets Inc. Due to the huge excitement the site created it was aquired for the second time by Viacom for almost $160 million (USD). The Neopets site now has over 145 million accounts with over 212 million virtual Neopets.
The Neopets characters are based around a virtual world called Neopia, where users can create their own Neopet and look after up to four individual Neope. Having to care for them, buy them food and play with them. To do this users use Neopoints which is Neopia’s virtual currency, which can be invested in virtual stock exchanges, trading and entering contests and of course by winning online Neopet games.
Neopet owners can explore Neopia and interact with each other through the use of Neomail, NeoBoards and Neopets guilds.
Of course one Neopets site wouldn’t be enough, so just in case you can’t get enough there is also Neopets Jr. and Neopets Premium. Neopets Jr. is a simpler version and is free for under 8 year olds, whereas Neopets Premium has a monthly subscription of $7.99, and offers additonal benefits and features. There has been a lot of controversy over the site over immersive advertising and gambling based gaming.
